A.R.T. Prepares One-Off Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG for Abu Dhabi Prince

Here's some more proof that wealth does not equal taste. This one-off Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG was developed by the German tuning firm A.R.T. specially for His Highness Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Sultan Bin Rashed Al Nahyan. Dubbed the AS55K Yaas Edition, the G55 AMG's stock 5.5-liter V8 has been optimized to deliver an output of 620 HP, up from 507 HP.

A high-performance brake system with 8-piston calipers up front and 4-piston brake calipers at the back complete the mechanical upgrades. From there on, it's all about styling - or so to say.

The AS55K Yaas Edition sports a full bodykit with many components coated in carbon-fiber along with polished stainless steel bars under the side skirts and the rear bumper and to top it all, a trio of chrome-plated tailpipes positioned right under the rear doors.

Furthermore, the widened fenders house 22-inch polished alloys wrapped in high-performance tyres while the Prince also opted to equip the G55 AMG with no less than 12 projector lamps including four xenon upper-beam headlights and eight fog lamps.

Open the Merc's door and you'll be greeted by cinnamon-colored leather and Alcantara that cover most surfaces matched (?) with carbon fiber decorative trim in a weird bronze hue.

A.R.T. did not say what the price tag was for this one-off creation but we reckon that only a Prince (or a King) could afford it.

SPIED: Maybach 57 and 62 to Receive a Minor Nip and Tuck

Parent company Daimler is out testing thinly camouflaged prototypes of the Maybach 57 and its long-wheelbase sibling dubbed 62. Even though the test cars don't appear to feature any visible styling changes, prospective buyers (yes, all 100 of you...) should expect to see similar modifications to those given to the facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In other words, minor cosmetic tweaks up front including a revised grille and quite possibly, reworked tail lamps.

However, the real improvements will be in the bits you cannot see with both Maybach models receiving upgraded or new technology and safety features as well as minor engine tweaks to improve fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.

Expect to see the 2010 Maybach models appearing in showrooms towards the end of the year, or early 2010, depending on the market.

G-Power BMW X5 Typhoon RS

Details on the G-Power BMW X5 Typhoon RS have been released, and it is currently the most powerful BMW X5 in the world based off the xDrive48i. From the factory it is powered by a 4.8 liter engine, and after the tuning performed by G-Power, performance numbers were increased by an amazing 270 hp and 475 Nm of torque. Resulting with a final output of 625 hp at 6,100 rpm, and 700 Nm of torque at 5,300 rpm. The upgrades include the latest G-Power SK III RS Supercharger that has a 1.0 bar boost pressure, new internal engine parts, engine electronics, ECU tuning, and a modified transmission. The BMW X5 Typhoon RS can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in 16 seconds, and has an overall top speed of 177 mph.

The performance upgrades also include a high performance exhaust system, racing catalysts, and an aluminum charge air cooling system. Aerodynamic improvements are also handled by G-Power and consist of wing extensions, front and rear skirts, and are made of OEM quality PU-rim technology for the strongest body pieces. Extending the fenders by seven inches allowed the fitment of the large G-Power Silverstone forged aluminum wheels, and they measure 23×11 in the front, and 23×12 in the rear. The 23 inch wheels are the largest available to fit the BMW X5 Typhoon RS and come wrapped in high performance Michelin tires that measure 315/25 ZR23. Prices have not yet been released by G-Power, but for the quality of work customers receive from them, you can’t expect this tuning to be cheap.

Sportec Audi S4 Avant

Here is the latest work from Sportec, and with all the car tuning modifications performed on the Audi S4 Avant, the results are not very impressive. Sportec was able to increase the horsepower by 92 with final numbers at 425 hp from the stock 333 hp. However, with that much of an increase in horsepower, at the track the Audi S4 Avant was only able to increase its 0-62 mph time by 0.1 second. That is surprisingly less than expected from Sportec after the large power increase, but they also worked on the exterior to give it an aggressive look for a station wagon. They added 19 or 20 inch wheels and lowered the car by 30 mm with stiffer aftermarket springs. An upgraded brake kit was installed and Sportec claims that the extra power improves everyday driving and saves fuel consumption compared to the Audi 4.2 liter V8 available in other models. Similar to other Sportec tuning packages, the parts and modification available for the Audi S4 Avant can be purchased individually and customized for the buyers needs.

European-Spec 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback to Debut in Frankfurt

Already available in North America and Japan, the all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback will have their European premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which will be held from September 17 through 27. Compared to their American counterparts, both models get a restyled front grille along plus redesigned lower part of the front bumper and larger exterior mirrors housing the turning signals.

The new Legacy Sedan and Station Wagon are 65 mm and 55 mm longer than their predecessors respectively while the wheelbase in both cases is expanded by 80 mm, allowing for greater rear legroom. In Europe the Legacy will be offered with two four-cylinder petrol engines, a 2.0-liter and a 2.5-liter unit, and Subaru's 2.0-liter turbo diesel boxer engine that makes 150 horsepower.

The fourth-generation Outback which is the crossover version of the Legacy Station Wagon featuring improved ground clearance and SUV-like protective body cladding will be sold in Europe with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel while certain markets will also get a range-topping 3.6-litre boxer 6-cylinder petrol model.

Mahindra’s U.S. launch delayed until February

Global Vehicles U.S.A. – Mahindra's U.S. distributor – announced earlier this year that the Indian automaker's mid-size pickup truck would be available in the United States by the fall 2009, but reports out of India suggest the truck's launch date has been pushed back to February 2010.

Mahindra's small truck – expected to be called the TR20 or TR40, depending on cab configuration – was running ahead of schedule for its U.S. launch, but the Indian automaker has reportedly decided to delay the truck's fall launch to ensure it is ready for discerning U.S. buyers.

“We will start production of Mahindra ‘Pik-up’ utility vehicle by December this year for the U.S., and by end-February next year, the vehicle will be sold there,” Pawan Goenka, Mahindra’s president of automotive operations, told reporters in India last week.

According to PickupTrucks.com, the news came as a surprise to GV U.S.A. and the 300 dealers currently signed up to sell the truck in the United States, but all were in agreement that the delay was “the right thing to do.”

When the Mahindra truck finally does hit the U.S. market, it will be powered exclusively by a 2.2L four-cylinder diesel. The truck will be available in both standard and crew cabs, with a SUV version likely to bow by the end of 2010.

Smart planning sporty three-seat model

Daimler will expand its Smart lineup over the next few years – to better compete with newcomers like the Toyota iQ – with the brand's first new offering likely to be a three-seat sports car. The forthcoming three-seat Smart was revealed via a leaked European patent drawing.

According to the drawings, the three-seat Smart, believed to be called the ForThree, will adopt a seating setup similar to the McLaren F1 – a centrally positioned driver's seat with two passengers' chairs flanking slightly back and on both sides. The driver's chair will reportedly swivel, aiding in ingress/egress.

The ForThree is intended to be a sportier alternative to the ForTwo, with much more aggressive lines. A range of three-cylinders are on tap for the ForThree – both gas and diesel – with the largest offering expected to displace 1.4L. Like the current ForTwo, the ForThree will use a rear-engine setup.

The ForThree will likely use Mercedes-Benz' seven-speed gearbox – a feature that should drastically improve performance and fuel economy – and an all-electric version is said to be in the cards.

The ForThree will likely be available in both Europe and the United States, with an on sale date set for sometime in 2014.

2010 Aston Martin Rapide Leaked Photos

Rapide, the latest creation of Aston Martin's engineers, is once again making the headlines, this time thanks to a couple of leaked photos giving us a better glimpse into how the future model will look like. Since the few photos we've seen in the past only show a bunch of exterior styling parts, the new images published by themotorreport.com.au also reveal the interior of the car, which will most likely feature leather or Alcantara as main materials. The Rapide will offer enough room for four passengers, as it features two individual seats in the back separated by a rear console providing access to some of the car's functions, including climate controls and electric windows. LCD screens are integrated into the front seats for rear passengers, so the console might feature infotainment control as well. Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr. Ulrich Bez said. The car will be powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine that generates 470 bhp (350 kW) and 600 Nm of torque. This unit will be mated to a Touchtronic gearbox likely to improve both the driving comfort and the overall engine performance figures. Pricing for the upcoming Rapide is still in the rumor stage but Aston Martin spokesman Marcel Fabris said the car is likely to be priced "in the low to mid $400,000s".

Iacocca shows off his custom 45th-anniversary Mustang:

The man behind the original Mustang--Lee Iacocca--is back with a custom-built 2009 version that celebrates 45 years of the iconic pony car.

Iacocca unveiled a sleek, performance 'Stang named after himself, the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition. It's available through Galpin Ford in Southern California and will be limited to 45 copies.

The car is based on the 2009 model and comes with two powerplants: a 4.6-liter V8 making 320 hp and a supercharged version making 400 hp. The transmission is a five-speed manual. Ford Racing chips in with firmer springs, revalved shocks and a braking package.

Inside are leather seats with embroidered stitching, an Iacocca-signature dash plaque with serial number and special badging on the steering wheel and sill plates.

The Mustang, called a 2009-1/2 to evoke the original 1964-1/2 cars, is the work of Iacocca, designer Michael Leone and California coachbuilders Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters. The venture is called I Legacy.

“Once in a while, a car comes along that changes everything, and that was the original Mustang,” Iacocca said in a statement.

Iacocca championed the Mustang as he rapidly advanced up the Ford hierarchy, eventually becoming president of the company. He was fired after a clash with Henry Ford II, moving on to memorably lead Chrysler from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

What is 230? We bet it's GM's moonshot--the Chevrolet Volt's mpg rating:

The number 230, with an image of an electric plug outlet as the "0," is popping up in a lot of places lately--such as the virtual ad on the backstop of televised baseball games and around the Web. It also has 8-11, for Aug. 11.

It's a teaser campaign leading to next Tuesday. And as pointed out by our sister publication Advertising Age, the fingerprints of people from Chevrolet marketing agencies are all over it. (Read the story at www.adage.com/adages/post?article_id=138346)

What is 230? We bet it's the mpg rating of the Chevy Volt--a number that General Motors hopes will put the Toyota Prius and other hybrids on the trailer.

GM and its ad agencies won't talk about the campaign, or even own up to it. Coincidentally, GM has scheduled a daylong technical briefing for the media for Aug. 11.

But a look at the Volt's series-hybrid powertrain and the EPA test used to calculate fuel economy show how 230 mpg is possible.

Start with the chief selling point of the Volt--the 40-mile range of the battery pack. GM touts that number to point out that the Volt could handle a person's daily driving needs without needing to burn any gasoline. The battery pack is recharged overnight by plugging in the car to a wall outlet.

Once the battery pack's charge reaches a minimal level, the gasoline engine kicks in. But it doesn't drive the wheels, it just turns a generator that supplies power to the electric motor. So this internal-combustion engine is optimized for the best fuel efficiency, running at a steady speed and without the drain of belt-driven accessories. We're talking a real gas-sipper.

Now, to the EPA test. The fuel-economy ratings on the sticker come from a series of tests (schedules, in government speak) that simulate driving in the city and on the highway, with the air conditioner engaged and in high-speed and cold-temperature conditions.

Here are the distances for each test:

-- City: 11.04 miles at a 21.2 mph average.

-- Highway: 10.26 miles at 48.3 mph average.

That's a total of 21.3 miles--which means the Volt won't burn a drop of fuel if the battery pack delivers slightly more than half its promised range. And it points out that the government's fuel-economy test may not be the best measurement for electric-intensive powertrains.

Certainly, GM engineers have made plenty of long-range runs with the Volt powertrain and have a good idea of the car's real-world fuel economy. Just breaking the 100-mpg barrier would give the Volt a huge leg up on the Prius and other parallel hybrids, which rely on the internal-combustion engine most of the time.

The "new" GM is looking for some early home runs to get back into the game. Clearing the 230-mpg mark would do the trick.

GM readying Aveo-based CUV for Buick

General Motors recently revealed that a new Buick crossover will hit dealer showrooms sometime next year – followed by a plug-in hybrid version in 2011 – but a new report suggests a second, and smaller crossover, will also be joining the Buick lineup.

According to Automotive News, a third Buick crossover will soon be joining the automaker's lineup, slotting below the Enclave and the recently announced – and yet-to-be-named – CUV model. Although a third CUV model for the Buick brands isn't the most shocking news to come out of Detroit – especially considering Buick is now one of GM's four core brands – but the platform set to underpin the new model is rather surprising.

Per several sources familiar with GM's plan, Buick's third crossover model will be based on the same architecture that will underpin the next-generation Chevrolet Aveo – likely to be renamed the Viva or Agile. With a footprint no bigger than Ford's upcoming Fiesta small car, the baby Buick CUV will offer seating for five but could give Buick a legitimate alternative to MINI's upcoming CUV.

It remains unknown what engine might power the small Buick CUV, but the Aveo replace will reportedly use a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder – the same size engine slated for MINI's CUV. If that powerplant makes it under the hood of the Buick CUV, expect at least 100 horsepower per liter.

Can US Automakers Catch Up to Prius?

As President Obama and other administration officials were yesterday announcing $2.4 billion in grants to produce the next generation of hybrid and electric cars in the US, Toyota was tallying record sales of today's leading hybrid car, the Prius. The Toyota Prius ranked as Japan's top-selling car in July, its third consecutive month in the top slot. In the US, July sales of the Prius jumped by nearly 50 percent from last month and were up 30 percent from a year ago.

The $2.4 billion in grants will support the deployment and trial of up to 6,873 plug-in hybrid or battery electric vehicles. It could take several months, or as long as a year, to deploy the trial vehicles. Meanwhile, Toyota sold 19,193 Priuses in the United States in July, plus an additional 5,122 hybrids from three other Toyota and Lexus hybrid models.

"I don't want to have to import a hybrid car," said President Obama at an appearance yesterday in Warakusa, Ind. "I want to build a hybrid car here."

It's About the Batteries

The majority of the $2.4 billion federal investment is supporting next-generation lithium batteries for advanced electric drive vehicles. "More research and more development of batteries is urgent and critical," said Dan Sperling, director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, in an interview with Christian Science Monitor. "Advanced batteries of different sizes and shapes will be in every car of the future."

"We're at the beginning of a very large opportunity," Brian Wynne, president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association, told The New York Times. "There's a choke point here. The choke point is the availability of automotive-grade batteries. That choke point is worldwide. That's not a US phenomenon."

In fact, Automotive News is reporting that Toyota cannot meet booming demand for the current generation of hybrid batteries—nickel metal hydride—because the company, and its battery partner Panasonic EV Energy, cannot produce hybrid batteries fast enough. Takahiko Ijichi, Toyota senior managing director, said, "Unfortunately, the batteries are not catching up with demand. Production of the batteries needs to be increased in order for our production to go up." Ijichi added, "The new Prius model has been excessively popular."

Toyota currently has annual Prius capacity of 500,000 cars. Panasonic EV Energy plans to boost capacity to around 1 million batteries by the summer of 2010, Ijichi said. In an interview with the Detroit Free Press yesterday, Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales, said, "My vision is to have a family of Prius vehicles."

On Driving Experience…

There's nothing quite like repeating a journey day after day to dull your senses. This is especially true if you're the driver of a journey that you take regularly. This can be dangerous due to being lulled into a false sense of security or driving on autopilot.

It's on just those occasions when you must make sure that your brain remains engaged. Be actively looking for dangers, threats, bad drivers, pedestrians, motorcycles, bicyclists etc etc. Keeping your mind awake and avoiding 'autopilot' is imperative to ensure that you'll be able to react, should the worst happen and a crash become a possibility.

Let me give you an example of just such an incident that happened to me – where I was switched on and the other driver was not. I was arriving to work at a previous place of employment, where there was a small roundabout prior to the parking area. A new Mazda RX-8 driver was clearly half asleep still as he swung in front of my path on the roundabout. Luckily, no damage was done to either vehicle and the (still tired) driver drove off looking incredibly sheepish.

There's no substitute for experience and for me this means ensuring you've driven on all kinds of roads, during day and night, in a variety of different weather conditions. This is the point of the Pass Plus scheme and why it also grants you lower insurance premiums (from some, but not all companies).

A really important aspect of driving is learning from your experiences. Without actively thinking about what's gone on (what took place) and how we handle situations, we never learn or improve our skills. This is why there are many out there who'll tell you that your learning to drive actually begins when you pass your test. Roadcraft is a lifeskill when you do pass – and so it should be when you're behind the wheel of something weighing more than a ton and capable of very quickly becoming an out-of-control weapon.

Alternatively, a competent, skilled driver with a comprehensive understanding of roadcraft can take pleasure from driving every day. Look out for future articles on roadcraft, where I’ll be giving tips on becoming a better driver.

Arden Jaguar XKR 5.0L Convertible Revealed

In spite of car enthusiasts who thinks Jaguars are great cars by default, some people think that a couple of models could benefit from a bunch of changes, especially when talking about appearance and engine performance. German tuning house Arden recently announced that its latest creation, the aftermarket 5.0-liter Convertible, will be displayed from August 7th to 9th in the motosportcenter at Nürburgring. The newest Jaguar from Arden is featuring a redesigned chassis, developed in collaboration with Bilsten and especially created to of the vehicles, as the company explained in a release. The package also includes a high-performance stainless steel exhaust system specifically introduced to generate a sporty sound but also to increase performance and improve handling at low speeds. The four pipe system is rounded-off with the well known AJ20 Wild Cat Heck plus diffuser, Arden revealed. The aesthetic enhancements continue with a new chrome-plated stainless steel grill plus Arden badge with "patented security fixing" and 21-inch sportline alloy wheels. Beside all the visual upgrades, the German engineers also improved the final output of the car, with the 5.0-liter engine now generating a maximum power of 540 bhp. The maximum speed is now going as high as 320 km/h, up from 250 km/h on the stock model. As we said, the car will be on display between August 7 and 9 at Nürburgring as part of the Oldtimer Grand Prix.

Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi announced today pricing for the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback GTS and Ralliart, promising future customers "similar distinctive and aggressive styling as the rally-inspired Lancer Evolution, yet with greater flexibility to accommodate active lifestyles."

The Lancer Sportback GTS has a starting price of $19,190 for the GTS with a five-speed manual transmission, while the six-speed CVT automatic transmission with magnesium paddle shifters starts at $20,190. Both versions are powered by a 2.4l engine, developing 168 horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Lancer Sportback Ralliart starts at $27,590 and comes equipped with Mitsubishi's 2.0l MIVEC turbocharged engine, developing 237 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. The unit comes mated to a quick-shifting six-speed Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST). The Ralliart comes with All-Wheel Control (AWC) and Active Center Differential (ACD) as standard.

"Today's new car buyers are moving toward smaller, fuel efficient cars, and yet, there is still a need for cargo capacity. The Lancer Sportback's carrying capacity, coupled with a more aggressive design than contemporary hatchbacks, perfectly fills the void," Bryan Arnett, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) manager of product strategy said while announcing the pricing.

The new Lancer is not all about power. For the driver, Mitsubishi will provide a wide range of safety, comfort and infotainment features, including dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags, driver's knee air bag and Active Stability Control (ASC).

The Lancers also feature in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability, plus Sirius Satellite Radio and a hard disc-drive navigation system with Mitsubishi's exclusive Diamond Lane Guidance.

The new 9-5 skin distinctive styling with a bold front end and a sleek profile. Overall, the project is pretty much what we estimated but there are several interesting touches such as blackened A-pillars and night decrease across the top of the border windows. At the rear, the sloping C-pillars help to give the 9-5 a dramatic appearance which extend helped by obvious LED taillights.

Inside, the lodge boasts traditional Saab plan cues such as a “7″ console, phobia air vents, and a midpoint console-mounted ignition. Other styling touches embrace glossy black embellish, aggressively bolstered seats, and a thick-rimmed steering controls. New Ferrari 458 Italia Revealed (photos and video)

Ferrari has officially revealed the F430 replacement, the new 458 Italia that will be debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Describing as a “colossal leap send” and a “authentic departure from the current extend,” Ferrari considers the new supercar to be “a synthesis of chic, creative elegance, passion and harsh-creep technology.”

Boasting a futuristic Pininfarina motif, the 458 Italia has a compact aerodynamic affect which helps to downgrade drag and mend downforce (which is 140 kg at 200km/h). The front ended skin a bold fence which houses small aero-elastic winglets “which breed downforce and, as velocity rises, deform to shrink the slice of the radiator inlets and cut drag.” Elsewhere, the car features small openings between the covering and headlights for added engine cooling. Out back, the 458 has aggressive rear end which houses a solid diffuser, California-mode taillights, and three axis-mounted exhaust tips.

Power comes from a new supervise injected 4499 cc V8 engine that produces 570 CV (at 9000 rpm) and 540 Nm of torque (at 6000 rpm, with over 80% offered from 3250 rpm). This is backed up by a seven-swiftness dual-hold transmission which has been specially engineered to match the potential and torque curves of the new V8. Ferrari estimates the 458 Italia will rocket from 0-100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds, before striking a top rush in surplus of 325 km/h (202 mph).

Ferrari also equipped the car with a complex absolute steering usage, efficient versions of E-Diff and F1-Trac which proffer a 32% enlarge in longitudinal acceleration, and a high performance braking technique which cuts the car’s 100-0 km/h braking expanse to a succinct 32.5 meters (106.6 feet).

The Ferrari 458 Italia features copious education erudite from business’s Formula 1 racing labors. First ever victory by a KERS-equipped car (July 26th Hungarian GP)

The Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes team scored their first 2009 season grand prix victory with the KERS-equipped MP4-24, when Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 26th. Hamilton had qualified fourth, but made a fantastic start thanks to the additional power provided by the KERS system which enabled him to charge down to the first turn to take second place and continued a faultless drive to win his first grand prix of the season.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes system is considered by many to be the best and most reliable KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery) system on the grid.

The British high technology company Zytek Automotive has been developing the KERS electric motor and power electronics in close technical partnership with Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines. The KERS device enables the MP4-24 to recover energy under braking, store the energy for a lap and release it when the driver presses a button on the steering wheel. With a fully optimised KERS device's output capped at 400kJ (discharging 80bhp boost for 6.7s per lap), there is a potential 0.3 – 0.5s gain per lap.

Zytek has a rich heritage in motorsport innovation and is also one of the world's leading specialists in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies for road cars. The company won immediate recognition for supplying the first fully electronic engine control system in Formula 1 when the revolutionary technology helped put Ayrton Senna's Toleman-Hart a very close second to Alain Prost in the torrential rain of the 1984 Monaco GP. Ford Confirms New Energy Policy

Senate passes cash-for-clunkers extension:

The Senate added $2 billion to "cash for clunkers" on Thursday, ending a week of suspense about whether the popular new program would have to shut down for lack of funds.

The bill, identical to the one that passed the House last week, now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature. The administration has pushed hard for the new funding.

Thursday's 60-37 vote is a victory for the auto industry, Democrats and consumers who have unexpectedly flocked to near-empty showrooms since the program began July 1.

"This has been a highly successful program, probably the most successful of any in the stimulus package to date," Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., said on the Senate floor.

The new funding will extend the temporary program through Labor Day and spur about 500,000 new auto sales on top of the 250,000 already completed, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has said.

LaHood warned last week that the program would have to be suspended because its $1 billion fund would be depleted by Aug. 2.

"Cash for clunkers is a new engine for automakers; a tune up for the environment; and a jump start for communities across the country whose economies are dependent on a strong auto industry," Dave McCurdy, CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said in a statement. "We applaud the administration and the Congress for their efforts to ensure that consumers can continue to take advantage of this successful program."

In passing the legislation, the Senate acted a day before its month-long recess begins.

The Senate rejected amendments from six Republicans and one Democrat that would have delayed new funding for at least a month and likely resulted in a suspension of the program.

Any amendments that passed the Senate also would have required approval by the House, which is in recess until after Labor Day.

The Senate overrode some Republicans' objections about the program's management, cost and targeting of the auto industry.

"We're going to subsidize the purchase of automobiles by stealing from our children," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

The $2 billion is to be transferred from a renewable energy loan-guarantee program funded under the stimulus package that was enacted last February. Congressional leaders have said they intend to replenish the Department of Energy funds.

The clunkers program provides $3,500 to $4,500 credits to consumers who swap trade-ins for new vehicles with higher mileage. Dealers are reimbursed by the government after furnishing the credits.

Congress responded in the past week with unusual speed to evidence that the program has invigorated the slumping auto industry and improved the fuel economy of vehicles on the road.

In July, Ford Motor Co. posted its first U.S. sales increase in 19 months, buoyed by cash for clunkers. Percentage declines at General Motors, Toyota Motor Sales and other automakers were the lowest for 2009.

GM, Toyota and Ford have responded to July sales surges by saying they will boost third-quarter production schedules or may do so.

The suspense about the future of the clunkers program began July 30 when a National Automobile Dealers Association survey found that stores had completed so many deals that the $1 billion fund would soon be depleted.

The program was supposed to last until Nov. 1, or until the funds ran out, whichever came first.

Fiat gets approval to purchase Bertone coachbuilding business:

Fiat S.p.A.'s bid for Carrozzeria Bertone S.p.A. was approved Thursday by the Italian government.

Fiat will invest $215.9 million (150 million euros) over three years in the struggling contract manufacturer that has produced models ranging from the Lamborghini Miura to the Volkswagen Polo during its 96 years in business.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne says he is interested in Bertone's plant in Turin, Italy, for niche vehicle production.

Fiat declined to say which niche model or models it would make in Turin. The only detail the company gave was that the vehicles would be sold in Europe and North America.

Fiat has a controlling stake in Chrysler Group and plans to relaunch the Fiat brand in the United States in early 2011. The U.S. relaunch of Fiat-owned subsidiary Alfa Romeo is planned for the end of 2011.

The Italian press has speculated that starting in the second half of 2011 Fiat could use the Bertone plant make everything from convertibles to large sedans.

The Bertone family lost control of the coachbuilding business when bankruptcy administrators took control in February 2008. The Bertone design business, which remains in the hands of the Bertone family, was not affected by the collapse of the contract manufacturing unit.

This was Fiat's second attempt this decade to take control of Bertone's coachbuilding business. In 2006, Fiat started negotiations to buy a controlling stake in the company. It planned to make a coupe/cabriolet for the Lancia brand at the plant.

For undisclosed reasons, the talks between Fiat and Bertone collapsed in spring 2007. Shortly after that, Fiat scrapped plans to make the Lancia car, which was known as the Fulvia.

Bertone, founded in November 1912, is Italy's oldest contract manufacturer. The company stopped volume production in December 2005.

Bertone still employs about 1,140 people, down from the 1,450-person work force it had at the end of 2007.

Mitsubishi sets prices for its five-door Lancer Sportback models:

The five-door Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback rolls into showrooms with a base price of just less than $20,000. Stepping up to the high-performance Ralliart version pushes the price to near $28,000.

Mitsubishi announced prices for the new Lancers on Thursday.

The base powertrain for the Lancer Sportback is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Take the five-speed manual transmission and the sticker price starts at $19,190, not including shipping charges. Selecting the continuously variable transmission, which adds paddle shifters to the steering wheel, moves the base price to $20,190.

For those like us who want more, the Sportback Ralliart gets Mitsubishi's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, rated at 237 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. The Ralliart powertrain also gets all-wheel drive, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and an active center differential. The sticker price starts at $27,590.

BMW, PSA Peugeot-Citroen mulling deeper alliance

BMW and PSA Peugeot-Citroen currently collaborate on small engine programs, but the two automakers could expand their relationship to include platform and parts sharing. The co-developed architectures and components would likely be used in smaller models, but could also be used in some BMW-badged vehicles.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer recently hinted that BMW was mulling a deeper relationship with PSA Peugeot-Citroen, and a new report seems to support that notion. An inside source revealed to the Financial Times that the two automakers are currently holding “preliminary talks” over platform and component sharing initiatives.

If a deal is hammered out, the alliance would likely be used for PSA Peugeot-Citroen's small hatchbacks and BMW's MINI range. However, it remains possible that some of the shared components could work their way into some BMW-branded models.

While it looks like a stronger strategic alliance could be forming between the two automakers, neither company is limiting themselves on the open market. Both BMW and PSA Peugeot-Citroen say they are also considering relationships with other automakers.

Frankfurt preview: Porsche 911 Turbo

Ahead of its launch next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche has taken the wraps off of its revised 2010 911 Turbo. A new 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine will crank out 500 horsepower – about double what the first 911 Turbo produced – and will be able to propel the car to 62 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds.

The direct-injected powertrain features turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and it can be paired with Porsche’s PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, the automaker’s dual clutch seven-speed transmission.

PDK models will also offer a new three-spoke sport steering wheel with paddle shifters and an integrated display for the Launch Control and Sport/Sport Plus mode.

Fuel consumption and emissions are down – the 911 Turbo will be capable of a combined fuel economy as high as 21 mpg, which the automaker says will prevent it from qualifying for the hefty gas guzzler tax in the United States.

All-wheel-drive will again be standard and a new Porsche Torque Vectoring system, which the automaker says will make the car “even more agile and precise in its steering,” will be an option.

Domestic market sales begin on November 21, where hardtops will start at Euro 122,400 and convertibles will start at Euro 131,800 not including the hefty 19 percent value added tax levied to cars in Germany.

The 36-year-old driver was waiting in his Lexus at a junction in Droylsden, Manchester, when he saw a police van waiting behind him. After he allowed the emergency vehicle to pass, he was informed that he was given a £60 fine and three penalty points. Lilley was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. added Lilley. Volkswagen Announces UK Pricing for new Polo

Starting from today, UK buyers can place their orders for the all-new Volkswagen Polo with first deliveries set to arrive on the car's official "on sale" date of 16 October. On-the-road prices for the five-door model range from at £10,035 for the entry-level S 1.2-litre 60 HP to £14,910 for the range-topping SEL with VW's new 90 HP 1.6-liter turbo diesel. Those interested in the three-door model will have to wait until December.

At launch, the fifth-generation Polo is available with a choice of five engines, three petrol and two diesel. The line-up includes a pair of naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrols with 60 or 70 HP and a 1.4-litre 85 HP, plus two 1.6-litre common rail TDI diesels making 75 or 90 HP.

Volkswagen will enhance the range with a new 1.2-litre 105 PS turbocharged TSI petrol unit from early in 2010 while GTI and BlueMotion models will follow later in year.

All Polo models come equipped with four airbags, ABS and, for the first time, ESP aka Electronic Stabilisation Programme, as standard.

The German automaker said that it anticipates UK Polo sales of around 7,000 units in 2009, increasing to approximately 37,000 in 2010.

Geiger Cars Hummer H2 Latte Macciatto

This bold head turner Hummer H2 Kompressor received some fancy tuning by Geiger Cars, and they named it the Hummer H2 Latte Macciatto. The tuners from Geiger Cars at GeigerCars.de developed an extensive styling package for the Hummer H2, and performance was increased as well to go along with the looks. Final power output from the truck is 547 PS and 763 Nm of torque from an added supercharger and engine tuning. With these modifications it is relatively quick for its size, running 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 228 km/h. Geiger Cars really performed some car tuning on the Hummer H2 Latte Macciatto by redesigning the whole interior, custom painting the exterior, and adding ridiculously large 30 inch chrome rims.

The complete car received a brown and creme or beige color scheme, while the interior was hooked up with a matching Alcantara roof, leather seats, and a mounted DVD monitor. For the exterior’s 30 inch monster wheels, additional suspension parts were needed, and include extra stabilizers, rear axle struts, adjustable shock absorbers, and they were even able to lower the car with springs despite the 30 inch rims. Other performance pieces that were installed are a Brembo brake kit, and a stainless steel sports exhaust system.

BMW Sports Car Concept Rendered from Spy Shots

Forum member "Robo Squirrel" over from Bimmerpost created this speculative sketch of BMW's Frankfurt Show-bound sports car concept using a set of snapshots of the prototype model covered in a semi-transparent plastic wrap that were posted on the same site on Wednesday. Just so you know before you start criticizing his work, "Robo Squirrel" himself admits that the sketch was the result of "a 5-minute attempt".

We'd say that the artist pretty much captured the essence of the concept which appears to be some sort of four-door coupe sports car. We're still unaware of the details surrounding the concept car, but it shouldn't be long before BMW releases some official information. Mazda MX-5 roadster distilled to Superlight concept for Frankfurt:

Mazda's design and engineering team in Germany has taken the MX-5 roadster and boiled it down to its pure speedster form to create the Superlight concept. We'll get a close look at the car at the Frankfurt motor show.

Some changes are obvious. Gone are the windshield--which means we won't see this car on U.S. roads--and the exterior door handles have vanished, which is no big trick for the custom-car crowd.

But our friends at Mazda haven't given up any technical details yet. Based on the name, we expect the Superlight to make extensive use of lightweight metals such as aluminum or magnesium. And a sketch of the cockpit shows areas of exposed body structure. There's no word on what engine might sit under the hood. But a lightweight body makes the engine's job much easier.

The production MX-5 isn't exactly a heavy car. But stripping away more weight will give it a boost in the fuel-economy department, techniques that could find their way to the production car.

Cash-for-clunkers clears 180,000 in sales, is poised for an extension:

The cash-for-clunkers program has reached sales of more than 180,000--topped by the Toyota Corolla--as the Senate is poised to vote on an extension of the program on as soon as Thursday.

The Ford Focus is the second-best-selling car under the program, and the Honda Civic, the Toyota Prius and the Camry complete the top five, according to Reuters. The top trade-ins were all domestics, including trucks from Ford and Dodge, as well as Jeep.

The clunkers program offers up to $4,500 to trade in older cars for new, more fuel-efficient rides. The program nearly exhausted its initial outlay of federal funding in a week, and an addition $2 billion could flow into the program if the Senate approves.

The White House supports the move, and the House of Representatives has already signed off on it.

The program has been widely credited with spurring sales in July as the automotive industry looks to recover from its worst slump in decades.

CARS drops inventory levels to record lows

The United State's cash for clunkers program has been a wild success, but it has left automakers with a new problem – record low inventories. Increased demand during the month of July significantly depleted inventories across the board, leaving many models in short supply.

According to Automotive News, new car supplies fell below the 2 million unit level on August 1, marking the lowest total since the Automotive News Data Center began combining data in 1992. July 2009 previously held the record at 2 million units as automakers slashed production to meet sagging demand.

Chrysler managed to cut its inventory by 30 percent – or 58,600 units – last month, dropping its supply from 71 days to just 40 days. Ford also saw a significant decrease in inventory last month – dropping from 57 days to 48 days – while General Motors decreased its supply from 82 days to 64 days.

Hyundai-Kia also managed a slight drop in inventory – 43 days down from 49 – while the cash for clunkers program seemingly cleared out Toyota's supply of vehicles. The Japanese automaker now has just a 29 day supply of cars on hand, down from 47 in July.

“Inventories are the lowest I have ever seen,” Gordon Stewart, a GM dealer in Michigan, told Automotive News. “We are scrambling to buy cars from other dealers. We are parking late-model used cars in spaces where new vehicles are normally displaced just so we look like we are still in business.”

Thanks to the record low inventory levels, automakers will likely boost production in the third quarter, possibly running into the fourth.
